A meticulously researched, carefully written documentation
Compiled and analyzed by Mormon scholar Gary James Bergera (Director, Smith-Pettit Foundation, Salt Lake City, Utah), Conflict In The Quorum: Orson Pratt, Brigham Young, Joseph Smith is a meticulously researched, carefully written documentation of the manifold disagreements between various strong-willed and devout leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, (popularly known as the "Mormons") during its first turbulent years of existence. Looking at how conflicts between diverse leaders had significant and enduring effects upon LDS doctrine, policy, and organizational structure, Conflict In The Quorum is an impressive body of scholarship which presents an astutely written and insightful account that can be read with considerable interest by both academic scholars and non-specialist general readers alike.

Curriculum Planning: A Handbook for Professionals
Published in Hardcover by Wadsworth Publishing (1994)
Author: David Pratt
Average review score:

Good Text
This was a great college text for a class I took on Curriculum Organization. The author did a thorough job explaining the process of planning, creating, and evaluating a curriculum. And while it wasn't the flashiest book that I've ever seen, it was definitely worth reading.

Dear Boris: The Life of William Henry Pratt A.K.A. Boris Karloff
Published in Paperback by Limelight Editions (November, 1995)
Author: Cynthia Lindsay
Average review score:

A tender and insightful look into a craftsman's life.
William Henry Pratt aka Boris Karloff was perhaps one of the most underated and illused actors in film history. Cynthia Lyndsay's book provides a most personal and loving journey into this gentleman's life. Included too in her portrait is a concise history of acting in the early 20th century as well as a detailed portrait of the actor's craft. Karloff was the consumate professional on stage and screen and off. This book is highly reccomended for any interested in the craft of acting.

Decisive Battles of the Korean War: An Infantry Company Commander's View of the War's Most Critical Engagements
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (August, 1992)
Author: Sherman W. Pratt
Average review score:

Infantryman's view of life in Hell
In Vietnam, we often spoke of seeing the "wolf" while Civil War veterans saw the "elephant". While the canine and pachyderm can't fully describe combat, they symbolize the enigmatic aspect of it. Anyone who has been in combat can't describe it and neither can those who haven't been in combat understand it. Sherman Pratt's book comes closest to bridging that gap between understanding and explaining the unexplainable than any book I have read.

The Korean War was a cold, violent, physically demanding war for both sides. Pratt's thesis is that certain battles were watershed events that shaped the outcome of the war. Pratt's description of life on the front lines is accurate and gives the layman an idea of what it was like to fight the Chinese human wave attacks.

After serving in WWII in Africa and Europe, Pratt reported to the famed 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division and was told he could kick up his heels in a staff job. He volunteered to take a rifle company from the Naktong River line to North Korea and back south after the Chinese intervention.

I can find little fault with the book other than some typographical errors and with some illustrations. The photographs are excellent and while they are obviously snapshots, they depict war as it was in 1951. I felt some battles were not told in sufficient detail such as the Twin Tunnels battle but Pratt is obviously keeping with his theme of Decisive Battles of the Korean War.

Pratt has strong opinions about his fellow officers and is most charitable with his superiors who made grievous errors.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know the infantryman's view of combat.
